Navy Not Sure What USS Connecticut Struck in the South China Sea, Beijing Accuses U.S. of Cover-Up

The U.S. Navy still isn’t positive what one of its most powerful attack submarines hit in the South China Sea, as repair assessments continue in Guam, four sources familiar with the results of the preliminary investigations told USNI News this week.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the undersea object that damaged the forward section of USS Connecticut (SSN-22) had not been definitively determined as part of several investigations into the Oct. 2 incident, the sources said.

Early indications were Connecticut hit a seamount in the South China Sea, two defense officials familiar with the Navy’s examination of the submarines told USNI News, but that has not been confirmed by investigators. Politico first reported earlier this month that the boat may have hit an undersea feature.

Hacker group leaks data, photos from Defense Ministry, Benny Gantz

A hacker group called Moses Staff claimed this week that it has successfully conducted a cyberattack on the Israeli Defense Ministry, releasing files and photos it claims it obtained from the ministry's servers.

Moses Staff's website claims that the group has hacked over 165 servers and 254 websites and compiled over 11 terabytes of data, including Israel Post, the Defense Ministry, files related to Defense Minister Benny Gantz, the Electron Csillag company and Epsilor company.

"We've kept an eye on you for many years, at every moment and on each step," wrote the group in the announcement of the attack on their Telegram channel on Sunday. "All your decisions and statements have been under our surveillance. Eventually, we will strike you while you never would have imagined."

China Blasts US-Taiwan Military Contacts After President Tsai Confirms American Presence on Island

Tensions over the Taiwan issue have escalated over the past month, as Beijing deployed around 150 military aircraft into Taiwan's air defence zone for drills. In the meantime, Taipei has warned that mainland China may be fully prepared to attack the island by 2025, while US President Joe Biden pledged to defend Taiwan from Beijing, if necessary.

"The US must adhere to the One China principle and provisions of three US-Chinese communique. We strongly oppose any official and military contacts between the US and Taiwan, as well as US interference in China's internal affairs", foreign ministry's spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a briefing, stressing that Sino-American relations are based on the One China principle.

Zuckerberg aims to transform Facebook from a social media platform into a ‘metaverse’ monopoly & we should all be very worried

Facebook sees the growing market for digital clothes, tools, and experiences online as the solution to one of its biggest threats: its declining appeal to kids. But the power it could wield in this metaverse is truly frightening.

It is not often that a company like Facebook, which reported revenue growth of 35% to $29 billion in the three months ending in September, with profits rising 17% to $9.2 billion, can be said to be in trouble. But Facebook is in trouble.

During this week’s earnings call with CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook announced its longer-term goal was to invest heavily in its Reality Labs (FRL), developing technologies like virtual and augmented reality. The plan, it was explained, will enable Facebook to become a significant player in and creator of the so-called metaverse – a future online world of immersive, virtual and shared spaces.

Woke mob attacks BBC over publishing stories of lesbians ‘being pressured into sex by some trans women’

The BBC is facing a backlash over a story about lesbians being branded transphobic for refusing to have sex with trans women. It has received hundreds of complaints, and the author has been forced to delete her Twitter account.
The article, published on the BBC website on Tuesday, addressed the issue of some lesbians in Britain “increasingly being pressured and coerced” into accepting trans women as their partners.

Several lesbians talked to author Caroline Lowbridge, sharing stories of how they were shamed and even threatened for being only attracted to biological women and rejecting the idea that a penis could also be a female organ. One claimed that her refusal to have sex with trans women had led to her being branded transphobic, a genital fetishist, a pervert and a ‘terf’ – a ‘trans exclusionary radical feminist’.

According to those interviewed for the story, the harassment came from a minority of trans women, as well as woke activists who weren’t trans themselves.

As evidence emerges of provocateurs inciting the Jan 6 Capitol riot, was an asset working on behalf of the FBI to stir up trouble?

The bureau has form for this modus operandi, after all. Just what was the role of mysterious ex-Marine Ray Epps in fomenting the invasion? And why’s he been removed from the list of suspects and not been arrested?

Ever since January 6, speculation has abounded that the US authorities either knew what was going to transpire in advance and allowed it to happen, or undercover state infiltrators played some role or other in orchestrating the upheaval.

While acknowledging that FBI informants were on the ground that day, and, indeed, the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers – two far-right groups that played prominent roles in the Capitol break-in and preceding protests – both have intimate ties to the Bureau at the highest levels, the latter theory has been universally dismissed as conspiratorial nonsense.

With US government representatives fighting in London’s High Court to extradite Julian Assange on Wednesday, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) called for his immediate release in a full-page advert in the Times.

The IFJ, which represents journalists’ unions worldwide, condemned his persecution by the UK and US governments, as well as the recently revealed “credible accounts of plans” by the CIA to assassinate or kidnap him.

The Sudan crisis lays bare the stakes of US-China competition in Africa... and doesn’t augur well for Washington

The military takeover in Khartoum seems likely to be the death knell for America’s plan to bring the war-ravaged nation back into the West’s orbit. African nations know who their most reliable partner is, and it’s Beijing.

Sudan is a country in turmoil, yet again. Following a coup by the country's military against the provisional government, which had pledged to establish a democracy in the African nation following the collapse of Omar al-Bashir's autocratic rule in 2019, violent protests have rocked Khartoum and seen at least seven people killed. The US, among others, has opposed the overthrow, demanding a restoration of the country's constitutional government.

The return of the military to power is, to say the least, a hammer blow to Washington, which under Trump courted the Sudanese transitional government and made a diplomatic breakthrough, removing the country from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list and normalizing its relationship with Israel.

Minnesota school board orders parents to announce their HOME ADDRESS before speaking at public meeting despite risk of making them targets for violence

A Minnesota school board chairwoman has stirred outrage after she demanded that parents announce their home address if they want to speak at public meetings - the latest flashpoint in the ongoing battle over the right to question administrators about COVID restrictions, CRT curriculums or any other controversial topics.

Jodi Sapp, the chairwoman of the Mankato school board, opened the meeting on October 18 by telling parents they cannot ask any questions unless they revealed their home address, according to the now viral video.

'Each speaker is asked to state his or her name and home address for the record. Failure to do so will result in an individual not being allowed to speak,' Sapp read aloud.

Garland's feds go after parents: Mother protesting porn on curriculum shares photo of federal law enforcement cars outside school board meeting after AG told FBI to crack down on parents

A mother-of-six who led the charge to remove sexually explicit books from school libraries has claimed federal law enforcement officials flew helicopters and stationed cop cars outside a school board meeting in Virginia to intimidate parents - after AG Merrick Garland was accused of treating parents like 'terrorists'.

Stacy Langton appeared on Fox News’ Fox & Friends on Wednesday and claimed that federal agents and unmarked law enforcement vehicles were seen outside a board meeting of the Fairfax County Public Schools last week.

Langton claimed that there was a heavy federal law enforcement presence just days after she and others protested outside the Department of Justice in Washington, DC.

She made the allegation as Attorney General Merrick Garland was accused of targeting Fairfax County parents protesting aspects of the school curriculum as ‘domestic terrorists.’

NBC’s McFadden: State Department Doesn’t Have ‘Real Number’ of People with Legal Status Stuck in Afghanistan, ‘Not Really Monitoring’

On Wednesday’s broadcast of NBC’s “Today,” NBC News Senior Investigative and Legal Correspondent Cynthia McFadden said the State Department is “not really monitoring” and doesn’t “have the real number” of people with legal status to live in the United States who are still stuck in Afghanistan, but they estimate there are thousands.

While discussing her report on the “thousands of people the State Department acknowledged have the legal status to live in the U.S.” who are still stuck in Afghanistan, McFadden stated, “Well, one of the interesting things is they’re not really monitoring. They don’t have the real number. But the secretary of state said thousands they estimate are stuck.”

Nunes Slams Wokeness at Diversity Hearing: We Can’t Counter Hypersonic Missiles with Better Pronoun Usage

House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes (R-CA) implored the leaders of the intelligence community at a hearing on diversity Wednesday to stay out of politics and focus on defeating enemies.

At the Democrat-organized hearing on “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” in the intelligence community (IC), Nunes said the IC seems to be increasingly focused on issues that distract from its mission to deter and defeat America’s enemies. “Unfortunately, we can’t counter a hypersonic missile launch with better pronoun usage,” he said

“The indications, ranging from trivial recruitment videos to major intelligence estimates, show an infatuation with leftwing dogmas and politicized actions that have nothing to do with deterring our enemies and winning wars,” he continued.

“We see this tendency not just in the Intelligence Community, but throughout the entire national security apparatus—in the military, the State Department, and other bodies,” he added.

Scientist Whose Wife Was Injured by COVID Vaccine Tells FDA: ‘Please Do Not Give This to Kids’

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) advisory committee on Tuesday endorsed Pfizer’s COVID vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, despite strong objections raised during the meeting by multiple scientists and physicians.

Brian Dressen, Ph.D., is one of the scientists who testified during the 8-hour hearing.

Dressen is also the husband of Brianne Dressen, who developed a severe neurological injury during the Utah-based portion of the U.S. AstraZeneca COVID vaccine trial in 2020. After being injured by the first dose, Brianne withdrew from the trial.

During his 3-minute testimony, Dressen, a chemist with an extensive background in researching and assessing the degree of efficacy in new technologies, told the FDA advisory panel Pfizer’s vaccine “failed any reasonable risk-benefit calculus in connection with children.”

Dressen said:

One FOOT deluge floods The Lakes: Homes and business are left underwater, roads blocked and trains delayed after Cumbria is hit by torrential 33-hour downpour

The Lake District was hit by severe flooding today as the region was lashed by 'extreme' downpours with more than a foot of rain falling in just 33 hours - blocking roads, disrupting trains and flooding homes and buildings.

Honister Pass in Cumbria has seen an extraordinary 335mm (13in) of rain fall in just 33 hours - well over a month's worth - after the Met Office warned of life-threatening floods in the region popular with holidaymakers.

Cumbria Police urged everyone in the county - including thousands of families on their half-term break - to only travel if necessary, with some roads having been flooded, including the A591 between Rydal and Grasmere.

As the French presidential race heats up, one thing is clear: support for the left is tanking

Recent polls in France show voters are deserting the left in droves prior to next year’s election, dashing the hopes of those who predicted the SPD’s success in Germany might signal a resurgence of socialism in Europe.

The race to be the next president of France is heating up. In recent months, we have witnessed a significant drop in support for Marine Le Pen and the emergence of another insurgent outsider, controversial journalist Eric Zemmour. Moreover, we have also seen the chances of Michel Barnier, the European Union’s former Brexit negotiator, quietly improve.

‘Woke’ German museum under fire over unsanctioned campaign to rename over 100 ‘racist’ artworks – reports

A German museum that renamed some 143 classic artworks it considered to have “racist or otherwise discriminatory” titles has been accused of “identity theft” after making the “far-reaching intervention” without a public mandate.

Since early 2020, curators at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) – a cultural museum under the German state of Saxony – have completely changed the titles of 120 pieces of art and made partial changes to 23 other works in an apparent effort to make them ‘politically correct’. The SKD houses an estimated 1.5 million-strong inventory of historic works.

The museum has been removing content it considers outdated, including the terms “gypsy,” “Eskimo,” “Indian” (referring to indigenous people) and “Moor” – and has reportedly even ditched references to “natives” and “dark-skinned” people.

Earlier that day, in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Yuri Kokov, the deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, said that the US is seeking to boost its military presence in the region, under the pretense of conducting anti-terrorism operations.

Snow hits Scotland today as Met Office warns of Storm Aurore fallout

Snow is set to fall in Scotland today as temperatures drop before the country braces itself for the fallout of Storm Aurore.

Forecasters say parts of the country will see "flurries" over the next few days after Aberdeenshire was treated to one of winter's first snowfalls last night.

It comes as the Met Office has warned of heavy rain and freezing winds to sweep in over the weekend as Storm Aurore batters the nation.

Up to 60mm of rain could fall in a 24-hour period in western Scotland and across the central belt in what will be an "unsettled weekend".

Storm Aurore has been causing havoc in England with heavy rain and flooding, with the tail-end of the wet and windy conditions set to impact Scotland before it moves across the English Channel.

On Wednesday evening, Braemar, Aberdeenshire, saw flurries of snow after one local captured the rare weather occurrence.

Lavrov Warns Terrorists Disguised As "Refugees" Are Trying To Infiltrate Neighboring Countries

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warns that terrorists posing as refugees are trying to infiltrate neighboring countries following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

Lavrov made the comments during a ministerial level meeting of Afghanistan’s neighbors (Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan).

“The current task on the agenda is to ease the effects of and control migration flows from Afghanistan, because terrorist and criminal elements posing as refugees may infiltrate neighboring countries and have already been trying to do so,” said Lavrov.

The Russian FM also called on the countries to resist attempts by NATO and the United States to forge a presence on their territory.

Following the Taliban takeover of the country, a top diplomat warned that “not even tanks” can stop a potentially large wave of Afghan refugees heading to Europe.

This after the Biden administration described the US being in a state of current "strategic competition" with its top most powerful rival of China. According to Reuters, Xi addressed a military conference Tuesday wherein he called for a "new situation" in the weapons industry toward rapidly kickstarting greater support for the production of the armed forces' needs.

Biden's Climate Financing Plan Won't Help Climate, But Will Push Country To Totalitarianism: Experts

Biden’s plan, sketched out in a recent “roadmap” White House report, would infuse projections on climate change into decisions across the financial industry (pdf). Applying for a mortgage or other loans? The bank would consider the “climate risk” of underwriting it. Taking out an insurance? “Climate risk” would play into your premium. Putting money into a pension or investment fund? The fund managers would be free to consider “climate risk” in deciding where to invest your money. Buying stocks on your own? Public companies would need to divert part of their attention to explaining “climate risks” they face. Applying for a government contract? Prepare to justify your carbon footprint.

Feminists Can't Wrap Their Heads Around Transgenders Assaulting Lesbians

Research shows some lesbians feel compelled to have sex with transgender women, and biological males. This splits feminists and the gay and transgender community on whether their sexual inclinations are deemed as transphobic.

The provocative BBC article mentioned a report by the lesbian group 'Get the L Out' that found 56% of 80 respondents said they were "pressured or coerced to accept a trans woman as a sexual partner." In a chat with other gay and transgender community members, lesbians reported getting death threats, rape threats, and verbal abuse for "questioning the trans doctrine" and were selected as TERFs, an acronym for "trans-exclusionary radical feminists."

Don't Expect To Afford Heat This Winter

Propane prices could increase as much as 100% this winter, forcing millions of people to dress extra warm or find a way to cough up thousands of dollars to keep their homes warm.

According to the Energy Information Administration, the average wholesale price per gallon of propane is currently a dollar higher than this time last year, having risen from around $0.60 last October to $1.60 now. In some places, such as Mont Belvieu in Texas, the price is three times higher than in past years.

Israel calls the fight for Palestinian rights ‘terror’ - and so turns reality on its head

Did someone forget to tell Benny Gantz that Donald Trump is no longer the United States president?

It certainly looked that way last Friday as Israel’s defence minister - who has been presented as a force for moderation in an Israeli government led by the settler right - declared six leading Palestinian human rights groups to be “terrorist organisations”.

The move effectively outlaws the most prominent organisations in the Palestinian human rights community.

Despite the eternal bonds so often lauded by Israeli and US officials, President Joe Biden’s administration appeared to be caught off-guard by the announcement, despite claims from Israel that Washington had been forewarned.

A Wealth Tax

Most Americans pay an annual wealth tax on their largest asset. It’s called property tax. Each year, they pay an amount equal to a small percentage of the estimated value of their house, and a house is by far the most valuable item that most families own.

The very rich are different. While they pay property taxes too, their homes tend to make up a tiny share of their net worth. The bulk of their assets are not taxed.

In past decades, other taxes — like the corporate tax (the burden of which falls on stockholders) and the estate tax — served almost as de facto wealth taxes. But those other taxes have declined, causing the total federal tax rate on the wealthy to plummet:

Hunting for Money, Democrats Rush to Rewrite Tax Code

As they hunt for revenue to pay for their sprawling spending bill and try to unite a fractured caucus, Democrats are attempting to rewrite the United States tax code in a matter of days, proposing the kind of sweeping changes to how America taxes businesses and individuals that would normally take months or years to enact.

The effort has effectively discarded trillions of dollars of carefully crafted tax increases that President Biden proposed on the campaign trail and that top Democrats have rolled out in Congress. Instead, lawmakers are throwing a slew of new proposals into the mix, including a tax on billionaires, hoping that they can pass muster both legally and within their own party.

US Coal Stockpiles Slump To Two Decade Low As Power Plant Demand Surges

One of the biggest ironies this year is the transition from fossil fuel generation to green energy has created a global energy crisis that is forcing the U.S., among many other countries, to restart coal-fired power plants ahead of the Northern Hemisphere winter. Coal is roaring back this fall but supplies are not catching up with demand.

According to Bloomberg, US coal supplies dropped to 84.3 million tons in August, the lowest level since 1997.

As of August, about a quarter of all US power generation was derived from coal. As winter approaches, coal-fired power plants will become a more significant percentage of all U.S. power generation.

Power plants are expected to burn 19% more coal this year because soaring natural gas prices have made it uneconomical to produce power.

Europe’s Digital Services Act: on a Collision Course With Human Rights

Last year, the EU introduced the Digital Services Act (DSA), an ambitious and thoughtful project to rein in the power of Big Tech and give European internet users more control over their digital lives. It was an exciting moment, as the world’s largest trading bloc seemed poised to end a string of ill-conceived technological regulations that were both ineffective and incompatible with fundamental human rights.

We were (cautiously) optimistic, but we didn’t kid ourselves: the same bad-idea-havers who convinced the EU to mandate over-blocking, under-performing, monopoly-preserving copyright filters would also try to turn the DSA into yet another excuse to subject Europeans’ speech to automated filtering.

NIH Removes Language on ‘Gain-of-Function’ From Website Amid Criticism Over Funding Chinese Research

The National Institutes of Health altered a key portion of its website last week around the time it disclosed to Congress that experiments it funded in China met the definition of gain-of-function.

The federal agency, known as the NIH, had a detailed explanation of gain-of-function research on its site, noting that the term refers to any research that modifies a biological agent in a way that confers new or enhanced activity to that agent.

But the explanation was wiped between Oct. 19 and Oct. 21—possibly ahead of the NIH’s most recent disclosures on Oct. 20 about research it funded in China that increased the potency of a virus by modifying it.

The updated page now says, in its only referral to type of research, that research involving enhanced potential pandemic pathogens (ePPPs) “is a type of so called ‘gain-of-function’ (GOF) research.”
