Thought for the day
"The tyrant, who in order to hold his power, suppresses every superiority, does away with good men, forbids education and light, controls every movement of the citizens and, keeping them under a perpetual servitude, wants them to grow accustomed to baseness and cowardice, has his spies everywhere to listen to what is said in the meetings, and spreads dissension and calumny among the citizens and impoverishes them, is obliged to make war in order to keep his subjects occupied and impose on them permanent need of a chief." -- Aristotle
WNBA star Brittney Griner’s Russian attorney said that her client was “devastated” with the nine year prison sentence handed to her by a Russian judge.
She was sentenced on Thursday to the harsh punishment on charges of drug possession and smuggling, for less than a gram of cannabis oil, on Thursday.
She pleaded guilty to bringing vape cartridges that contained cannabis oil into Russia, which is a crime.
“She’s devastated. She is very upset and she’s honestly quite shocked, so she needs to digest what happened today,” her attorney Maria Blagovolina, a partner at Rybalkin Gortsunyan Dyakin and Partners, said to People.
Her attorney said that the punishment for this crime is usually not as severe as Griner’s sentence.
“So nine years, it’s pretty unusual and it contradicts the existing court practice in Russia,” she said. “That’s why we are really disappointed and very much surprised by this decision of the court.”
A Georgia couple has been charged with using their two adopted children to record child pornography, police said.
Walton County Sheriff’s Office raided a home in Loganville July 27 on reports that a man there was downloading child porn.
After interviewing the suspect, who was not identified, police said they learned there was another suspect in the county who was “producing homemade child sexual abuse material with at least one child who lived in the home,” the sheriff’s office said Thursday.
Around 11:30 p.m. that same night, executed a search warrant in Oxford at the home of William Dale Zulock, 32, and Zachary Jacoby Zulock, 35.
Walton County’s Division of Family and Child Services joined deputies in responding to the home to help protect the two brothers who lived there.
During their search, deputies found evidence the pair, who were the children’s adoptive fathers, “were engaging in sexually abusive acts and video documenting this abuse,” the sheriff’s office said.
Here we are, sweating through one of the hottest summers in recent years, and I'm already talking about frost. What in the world is wrong with me? I know it seems strange, but Fall really isn't that far away. Before you know it, we all be bundled up, cheering for our team under those 'Friday night lights.' One indication that Fall has officially arrived is the appearance of frost.
A Democratic congressional staffer impersonated a federal agent and led the Secret Service on a weeks-long manhunt between late 2020 and early 2021.
The congressional staffer, Sterling Devion Carter, worked for Democratic Rep. Brad Schneider of Illinois, according to reporting from The Daily Beast.
Police spotted Carter impersonating law enforcement on November 12, 2020, at around 11:45 a.m. He was spotted standing near a blue Ford Taurus resembling a police cruiser in Washington D.C.
The vehicle had blue emergency lights activated, an affidavit in support of Carter’s arrest warrant said.
The vehicle also had a D.C. license plate, although officers said it appeared to be fake, since the letters on the tag appeared longer and bolder than regular D.C. tags.
The housing and renting market continues to teeter on the brink, and the newest incoming data doesn't offer up any clear signs of stabilization. In fact, new data continues to suggest the opposite: that volatility in housing could only be beginning...and that we're going to have plenty of fodder on deflation, which we have talked about frequently, invoking the effects of a "reverse bullwhip" on the economy.
A new report from Apartments.com examining multifamily rent growth trends for July 2022 shows that the Sunbelt markets are set up for what is being called a "a significant collapse of demand" heading into the back half of 2022.
Sunbelt cities, which had previously "dominated the top 10 rent growth markets in July with eight out of 10 located within the region" are now setting up for the fastest pullback.
The Senate parliamentarian has given the green light to a $740 billion budget reconciliation bill that will reform the tax code, tackle climate change and lower drug prices, putting the Senate on track to begin voting on the bill Saturday afternoon.
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Saturday that the bill is on track to pass this weekend now that the parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, has ruled that its provisions comply with the budgetary rules enabling it to circumvent a GOP filibuster.
“Our meetings with the parliamentarian have now largely concluded, and we thank her and her staff for their hard work and diligence on such a large bill in such a short period of time,” he said. “Now that our meetings with the parliamentarian have largely concluded, we have a bill before us that can win the support of all 50 Democrats.”
Schumer said the bill’s major provisions remain “largely intact,” though the parliamentarian did strike a provision that would have limited prescription drug price increases to the rate of inflation. The Senate rules official allowed to the inflation cap to be applied for Medicare beneficiaries but ruled out extending the cap to people with private health insurance.
Warlords in Ukraine? Who could have seen this coming?
During his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, FBI Director Christopher Wray repeatedly deflected Republican lawmakers’ questions and refused to take responsibility for the partisan mess his agency has become.
In his opening statement, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who has been one of the most vocal critics of the FBI in recent weeks, said that recent reports have put the agency’s reputation “on the line.”
“Director Wray, simply put, the FBI’s credibility is on the line, as are principles that helped found and sustain our great nation,” Grassley said.
An exhibit dedicated to those who have faced criminal prosecution stemming from the January 6 Capitol riots created a stir at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this weekend in Texas.
The set inside the Hilton Anatole in Dallas featured a mock prison cell complete with a live action model prisoner who sat barefoot in an orange jumpsuit crying.
At one point, headsets were distributed to viewers which played harrowing courtroom testimony from Jan 6 defendants.
“It’s stunning really,” Michael Lovorn, 50, Dean of School of Education at St. Mary’s University in Minnesota, who said he found the exhibit to be “compelling.”
The exhibit organizer — who also played the role of the prisoner — was Brandon Straka. The one-time New York City hair stylist rebranded as a pro-Trump activist and founder of nonprofit Walk Away Foundation which encourages people to leave the Democratic party.
A study has discovered a 50% surge of American children and teens with autism from 2017-2020.
China's Researchers at Guangdong Pharmaceutical University discovered that 3.49% of American children or teens – roughly 1-in-30 kids – had been diagnosed with autism by 2020, the Daily Mail reported.
Notably, U.S. and Europe have higher rates of autism because of better medical care and more prevalent medical diagnostics of the condition, according to the report. Only 2.2% of American children had autism in 2017, and the study proposed better surveillance and diagnosis of the condition in 2016.

The Christian flag was raised in a victory for free speech outside Boston’s City Hall this week.
The Supreme Court deemed in May that Boston discriminated against a conservative activist because of his “religious viewpoint” when it dismissed his request to fly the white and blue flag with a red cross on a flagpole outside City Hall.
“We’re so pleased for this day,” Boston native Harold Shurtleff said at the flag-raising ceremony Wednesday, according to the Religion News Service. “We have a great Constitution, and we have a wonderful First Amendment, but just like when it comes to muscles, if you don’t use it, they get weak.”
The August heat is stifling in Gaza, and the air is heavy with the smell of gunpowder. Blood dots the roads, and piles of rubble from destroyed buildings continue to grow.
For the second day in a row, Israel has continued to carry out Operation Breaking Dawn, marking its latest military onslaught on the Gaza Strip. As of the time of writing, 24 people have been killed, among them 5 children, and 203 people have been injured.
Before launching the latest military operation, the Israeli government had closed off its border with Gaza on August 1, 2022, crippling major sectors in Gaza’s economy, chief among them the power sector.
The tax-and-spend bill will be passed through budget reconciliation (no Republican votes needed) so it needed approval from the Senate Parliamentarian.
Nancy Pelosi traveled to Taiwan and the Far East and met with numerous entities and individuals. Was the purpose for her to increase her family fortune?
The two photographs below originated from a source in Taiwan. The circled man in the photo on the left is the same man labeled as Paul Pelosi Jr., Nancy Pelosi’s son, in the photograph on the right. That man is clearly part of Nancy Pelosi’s inner entourage, but, strangely, he does not appear in any other photographs circulating on the internet.
President Biden referred to himself as “vice president” Thursday while lamenting his inability to purchase an electric Corvette — in the latest job title mixup from the commander-in-chief.
“I’m not going to be able to do it because I can’t drive a vehicle while I’m vice president,” Biden announced throughout a virtual meeting with General Motors CEO Mary Barra.
Biden, who already owns a 1967 Corvette Stingray, quickly fixed himself, continuing, “while I’m president.”
Challenger Joe Kent is now within striking distance of winning the primary in the Washington State election against Never-Trumper Jaime Herrera Beutler.
The alternative media was all a buzz this week as several previously young, healthy doctors all died within just a few days of each other.
The biggest story came out of Canada’s Trillium Health Partners-Mississauga Hospital in Toronto, where 3 physicians from that hospital died “unexpectedly” within the same week, and according to a nurse who also works in the same hospital, the deaths followed after the hospital started mandating the fourth Covid shot for their employees.
Three physicians at Canada’s Trillium Health Partners-Mississauga Hospital died unexpectedly in the same week. The cause of death for the three doctors has yet to be announced.
The news about the three deceased doctors was first shared by independent journalist Monique in a post that went viral. According to Monique, a concerned nurse shared with her a copy of the memo that was sent out by the hospital’s management.
According to the nurse, the three doctors died after the hospital started mandating the fourth Covid shot for their employees.
“Three physicians at the Mississauga hospitals have died this week,” the nurse told Monique. “1st memo Monday, 2nd Tuesday, 3rd Thursday. [The] cause of death wasn’t shared in the memo, but how many times have 3 doctors died in 1 week, days after the hospital started administering the 4th shot to staff.”
Sometime in the future a learned academic will be writing a weighty tome with the title The Decline and Fall of the Western Empire. Perhaps the Contents Page will include, among others, twelve chapters with titles something like this: World War One. World War Two. Korea. Vietnam. Palestine. Iran. Nicaragua. Afghanistan. Iraq. Syria. Ukraine. Taiwan.
Indeed, Karin Kneissel, the former Austrian Foreign Minister, is at present writing a book with the working title A Requiem for Europe. In an interview with Asia Times on 31 July she declared that ‘European countries are growing ever weaker on the international stage and their places are being taken by Asian countries’. She said that the Europe ‘where she was born and grew up and to which she was devoted no longer exists’. ‘European leaders, through ignorance and arrogance, are neglecting the existing geopolitical realities and basic principles of diplomacy and this has created a dangerous situation’.
She added: ‘This is connected with Eurocentrism. We believe that we are so great that nobody can do without us…It seems to me that Europe needs Russia more than Russia needs Europe. If I am right, then is it really in the interests of the Old World to treat Moscow as an enemy, inclining Moscow to Beijing? Today Europeans are more and more disillusioned and desperate and this may cause mass disorder and anti-government violence’.
Things are so bad in New York that the bodega worker wrongfully charged with murder in a self-defense case is taking off to the Dominican Republic.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) promoted the Hollywood film industry to stop filming in the cheaper but more conservative states, such as Georgia and Oklahoma, that passed restrictive abortion measures.
An ad from the governor, which encouraged Hollywood to make a decision based on common values, was published on the same day Newsom supported legislation that would invest $1.65 billion in California's Film & Television Tax Credit Program by extending it for an additional five years.
Some massive film companies have decided to conduct their shootings in different states than California, mainly because of the cost required to film in those states is much cheaper than to film in California.
