Thought for the day

"All vets are mentally ill in some way and government should prevent them from owning firearms." -- Diane Feinstein

After doing everything in their power to help Joe Biden win the 2020 election - including the yellowest of journalism to downplay the NY Post's credible report on Hunter Biden's evidence-filled laptop - CNN appears to have gone against their child-sniffing commander-in-chief.

During a Sunday segment of CNN's "Reliable Sources," host Brian Stelter admitted that the Hunter Biden laptop story is not "just a right-wing media story," and that it could impact Joe Biden's chances for reelection in 2024.

"What about his son?" asked Stelter. "What about Hunter? Hunter under federal investigation, charges can be coming at any time, this is not just a right-wing media story. This is a real problem for the Bidens."

Americans are tired, at odds with themselves and in no shape to handle more foreign entanglements — much less the three-front catastrophe looming before us. Yet here we are, with the U.S. potentially facing a drawn-out war in Ukraine that risks escalating into a direct U.S.-Russia confrontation, the collapse of the Iran nuclear deal that may lead to war with the Persian Gulf power and now an unnecessary crisis with Beijing over Taiwan, triggered by Nancy Pelosi’s ill-advised trip to Taipei.

Ultimately, this trifecta of crises further de-prioritizes the real existential threat of our era.

Ultimately, this trifecta of crises further de-prioritizes the real existential threat of our era: climate chaos. But that’s another story. For now, the Biden administration still has the opportunity to prevent one of these potential crises: the Iran nuclear conflict.

There is neither victory nor even a certain outcome in sight in Ukraine in the short to medium term. The U.S. and its allies, as well as the Russians, are preparing for a prolonged conflict. Stamina and commitment will determine the outcome of that war. Yet, as MIT professor Barry Posen writes, even after more resources are poured into the war, the most likely outcome will still be “a long, bloody, and ultimately indecisive war.”

The EU’s return to the Iran nuclear talks in Vienna appears to have borne fruit, as after just four days they have submitted what they are calling the final text that tackles everything. The text had been more or less finalized for months, but the EU is now saying this is it, and the question is if Iran and the US will accept it as written.

For Iran, this appears a straightforward matter. They want the inquiry on uranium particles found at undisclosed sites resolved, and that’s the red line for that country to accept what’s on offer.

The US, however, is not clear at all as to its intentions. The Biden Administration has said there is no cost to hearing out the process but has been very stubborn about agreeing to anything. The Administration will probably want to keep the inquiry going, for spite if for nothing else.

The EU is very hopeful that they’ve succeeded with the draft text, and Russian envoy Mikhail Ulyanov told reporters that that “we stand five minutes or five seconds from the finish line.

“But Doaa, it’s not much safer at my home,” my nine-year-old cousin whispered to me while she sipped her afternoon tea, waiting for her dad to come take her back, even though she was supposed to spend the rest of the day at our house.

“I know,” I told her with as much of a reassuring tone as I could muster. “But at least you’ll be able to be with your mom and dad and your siblings.”

I didn’t have the nerve to tell her that some parents in Gaza want all their children around them when another war inevitably breaks out. The full package offer is preferable in such conditions — either they live together, or they die together.

The Biden administration approved new arms sales worth an estimated total of $5 billion to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier this week.

In the latest sign that the administration is resuming business as usual with the two client governments, the State Department justified the potential sales of Patriot and THAAD missiles as necessary to assist in defending their countries against possible aerial attacks.

The notification of new arms sales came as the truce in Yemen was extended again for another two months in what has been the longest pause in hostilities since the beginning of the Saudi-led coalition’s intervention in March 2015. While the sales would technically be in line with the Biden administration’s commitment to sell only defensive weapons to Saudi coalition members, the U.S. should not be providing these governments with weapons of any kind at least until the war on Yemen has ended.

Any military support that helps Saudi Arabia and the UAE to continue their interventionist policies in Yemen is unacceptable enabling of an unjust war and should be rejected by Congress.

What a mess our elections are.  Thanks to Democrat corruption in the 2020 Election steal, most Americans, nearly two-thirds, are concerned about cheating in this November’s election.  They should be.

President Trump’s home Mar-a-Lago was RAIDED BY THE FBI on Monday night.

President Trump released a statement moments ago.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before,” President Trump said in a statement. “After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.”

“It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024, especially based on recent polls, and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections. Such an assault could only take place in broken, Third-World Countries. Sadly, America has now become one of those Countries, corrupt at a level not seen before. They even broke into my safe! What is the difference between this and Watergate, where operatives broke into the Democrat National Committee? Here, in reverse, Democrats broke into the home of the 45th President of the United States,” he added.

Amina Ashkinan’s grandchildren were playing in front of their house at Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday when an Israeli strike came from the sky.

Her granddaughter, 10-year-old Mayar, was hit by shrapnel in the abdomen. Her grandson, nine-year-old Ahmed, got injuries all over his body. Both children were rushed to Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, just two of the dozens of Palestinians to be transported to the main hospital in the Gaza Strip during Israel’s latest bombardment of the besieged enclave.

The Kremlin said on Monday there was no basis for a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents at the moment.

In response to a question about Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's offers to broker peace talks, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call that Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskiy could meet only after negotiators from both sides had "done their homework".

Negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv have been stalled for months, with each side blaming the other for a lack of progress.

"The Ukrainian delegation has gone off the radar, there is no negotiation process now," Peskov said on Monday.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s announcement late last year that it would launch a super PAC, the United Democracy Project, and endorse candidates sent shockwaves through foreign policy and advocacy communities.

AIPAC had long refrained from engaging in electoral politics, preferring instead to lobby members of Congress to support maintaining Israel’s nearly $4 billion in annual military and other aid from the United States and to oppose diplomatic efforts to constrain Iran’s nuclear program.

But now that the super PAC is active, raising over $27 million, and running ads to support or oppose Democratic primary candidates for the 2022 midterms, it’s becoming clear what UDP’s fundraising and spending strategy is: raise money from hawkish Trump supporting GOP big donors and spend on ads to benefit Democratic candidates who won’t question U.S. policy towards the U.S.’s biggest foreign military aid recipient.

Curiously though, the ads paid for by UDP, affiliated with the largest pro-Israel group in the country, don’t mention  the groups’ central issue: Israel.

The White House on Monday called on Russia to “return full control” of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant near Energodar to the Kiev authorities. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukrainian forces of “nuclear terrorism” for bombarding the Russian-held facility twice since Friday.

“Fighting near a nuclear plant is dangerous,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday, flying with President Joe Biden to Kentucky to tour areas damaged by flooding.

“We continue to call on Russia to cease all military operations at or near Ukrainian nuclear facilities and return full control to Ukraine,” Jean-Pierre added. “We are also aware of the reports of mistreatment of the staff and we applaud the Ukrainian authorities and operators for their commitment to nuclear safety and security under trying circumstances.”

On Monday, the government in Kiev called for a demilitarized zone to be established around Europe’s largest power plant. The Zaporozhye facility has been in Russian hands since February, with its Ukrainian staff continuing to operate and supply Ukraine with electricity.

Russia has accused Ukraine of “nuclear terrorism” over the repeated attacks on the facility. Ukraine’s 44th Artillery Brigade fired at the plant on Sunday from the village of Marganets, on the opposite side of the large Kakhovka water reservoir, General Igor Konashenkov said in a briefing on Monday. It was the second time Ukrainian shelling has caused a fire and a partial power outage at the plant since Friday, he added. Ukrainian troops targeted the Zaporozhye plant with several suicide drones in late July.

Back when “gay marriage” was being debated, I spoke with a Liberal friend about it. I pointed out that one of my concerns was that if it was made legal, it would be used as a weapon with which to destroy anyone who disagrees with it. I was told, categorically and emphatically, that “That will never happen.” When what I predicted did happen, I mentioned this to the Liberal, who just smiled.

I have listened to Liberals who have stated clearly that if your skin is “white” you are a racist, you cannot avoid being a racist, and you can’t stop being racist, even if you have never said or done anything hateful toward anyone with dark skin. But, if your skin is dark, you can’t be a racist no matter how hatefully you speak and act toward people with “white” skin.

I have listened as Liberals waxed eloquent about how horrible, nasty, terrible, toxic, and evil the “Patriarchy” was/is - in which old white men are granted absolute authority over the household and all its members - even to the point of ordering them killed. But when it comes to women having the exact same absolute authority over the lives of the members of their household, it’s a “good and right thing.”

President Trump’s home Mar-a-Lago was RAIDED BY THE FBI Monday night.

The FBI agents cracked open Trump’s safe.

Trump was not at his Mar-a-Lago residence at the time of the raid.

“These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents. Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before.” Trump said in a statement.

According to the Associated Press, FBI agents were looking for classified documents that Trump may have taken from the White House while he was president.

Webmaster addition: The documents in question had already been declassified.

The Lebanon-based buyer of the first grain shipment to depart Ukraine since Russia’s invasion has refused to purchase the cargo, according to Ukraine’s embassy in Beirut.

The buyer has raised concerns over the quality of the grain, due to the five-month delay in its shipment. The charterer is now looking for a new buyer inside Lebanon or the Middle East, an Istanbul-based ship agent with knowledge of the matter told Middle East Eye.

“The ship owner is not happy about the case. It’s been six months of waiting. That is a big cost,” the shipping agent told MEE on condition of anonymity.

Last week, the Sierra Leone-flagged Razoni, loaded with about 26,000 tonnes of corn, became the first ship to set off from a Ukrainian port since the Russian invasion. The vessel left under the safe passage of a UN-proposed deal struck between Moscow and Kyiv and brokered by Turkey.

The Washington Post’s lead “Fact Checker” columnist did not accurately recount public health officials’ statement when he tried to discredit reporting about a 10-year-old rape victim, according to emails obtained by The Lever.

Last month, the Post’s Glenn Kessler, who has led the paper’s Fact Checker column since 2011, wrote a widely-shared column questioning the sourcing behind a viral news story about an Ohio child who traveled to Indiana for an abortion after being raped. The column was amplified by conservative media outlets as alleged proof that progressives were exaggerating the effects of the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Days later, a man was arrested for committing the crime — further substantiating the original reporting and debunking Kessler’s column. The arrest was made after Franklin County Children Services in Columbus, Ohio, referred the matter to the police.

Kessler’s Fact Checker column originally claimed that none of the county officials he contacted “were aware of such a case in their areas.” He hastily updated his column to say, “Unlike similar Ohio county agencies we contacted, Franklin County officials did not offer a response."

Neither of these statements were accurate: Emails obtained by The Lever through an open records request indicate that Franklin County Children Services responded to Kessler’s outreach promptly, and informed Kessler that their agency could not comment on specific cases, because this information is treated as confidential under Ohio law.

South Korea foreign minister Park Jin is set for his first visit to China on Monday as President Yoon Suk-yeol's government seeks to reassure Beijing about their relationship despite stronger ties with the United States and tensions over Taiwan.

Park is scheduled for a three-day stay in the eastern port city of Qingdao, during which he will hold talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Seoul's foreign ministry said. Park is the first high-level official to travel to China since Yoon took office in May.

His trip comes after Beijing expressed outrage over U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan last week. China claims the self-governed island as its own.

Webmaster addition: This may be why the President of South Korea refused to meet with Nancy Pelosi!

Academics in Egypt have been left scratching their heads after a decision by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to grant civilian scientific degrees to students of military colleges.

The July announcement, largely overlooked by local media, has caused anger inside academic circles, as some say it trespasses on the sanctity of academia.

"This decision violates the constitution," Mustafa Kamel al-Sayed, a political science professor at Cairo University, told Middle East Eye.

"Constitutionally speaking, the minister of defence does not have the right to offer civilian college degrees."

Under the new measure, the minister of defence will be able to grant civilian degrees to graduates of different military colleges.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday warned of the scope for miscalculations over tensions in the Taiwan Strait, which he said were unlikely to ease soon amid deep suspicion and limited engagement between the United States and China.

In a televised address ahead of the city-state's national day on Tuesday, Lee said Singapore would be buffeted by that intense rivalry and tension in the region, which should prepare for a future less peaceful and stable than now.

"Around us, a storm is gathering. U.S.-China relations are worsening, with intractable issues, deep suspicions, and limited engagement," Lee said.

"This is unlikely to improve anytime soon. Furthermore, miscalculations or mishaps can easily make things much worse."

On Monday, the Israeli occupation army illegally annexed Palestinian lands in Sa’ir town, north of Hebron, in the southern part of the occupied West Bank.

Hasan Breijiyya, the head of the Bethlehem office of the Wall & Colonization Resistance Commission, said the army issued orders illegally confiscating Palestinian lands in Basin 4 in the Aqabat ar-Rabee’a area in Sa’ir.

He added that the army annexed the privately-owned Palestinian lands to expand the Wad Sa’ir Street used by the illegal colonizers.

Breijiyya also said that the annexation would lead to uprooting dozens of Palestinian trees on both sides of the street.
