Thought for the day

"All vets are mentally ill in some way and government should prevent them from owning firearms." -- Diane Feinstein

Tax reform advocate Grover Norquist dumped cold water on the notion that Vice President Kamala Harris cast the “deciding vote” on the Democrat-led Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, arguing that every single Democrat who voted to pass the package had effectively been the deciding vote.

William and Zachary Zulock have been charged with using their two adopted children to make child pornography.

William and Zachary Zulock have been charged with using their two adopted children to make child pornography.

A Georgia couple has been charged with using their two adopted children to record child pornography, police said.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office raided a home in Loganville July 27 on reports that a man there was downloading child porn.

After interviewing the suspect, who was not identified, police said they learned there was another suspect in the county who was “producing homemade child sexual abuse material with at least one child who lived in the home,” the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Around 11:30 p.m. that same night, executed a search warrant in Oxford at the home of William Dale Zulock, 32, and Zachary Jacoby Zulock, 35.

Walton County’s Division of Family and Child Services joined deputies in responding to the home to help protect the two brothers who lived there.

During their search, deputies found evidence the pair, who were the children’s adoptive fathers, “were engaging in sexually abusive acts and video documenting this abuse,” the sheriff’s office said.

Ukrainian troops launched an attack against the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant overnight, using an Uragan multiple rocket launcher, with shrapnel and a rocket engine falling at 400 meters (1,312 feet) from the station’s operating power unit, the military and civil administration of the city of Energodar said.

“Last night, the Ukrainian armed forces carried out a strike using a 220 millimeter Uragan rocket launcher,” the administration spokesperson said.

The missile unfolded and released shrapnel warheads as it approached the power units, the spokesperson noted.

“The area of the dry storage facility for processed nuclear fuel and the automated control post of the radiation situation appeared to be in the strike zone. Administrative buildings and the adjacent territory of the storage facility were damaged by the cluster munitions. It is important to note that the fallen shrapnel warheads and the rocket engine itself fell no more than 400 meters from the active power unit,” the spokesperson added.

Megacorporation Amazon has expanded its empire of data capturing devices by spending $1.7 billion purchasing beloved maker of vacuuming robots and former beloved maker of warzone robots iRobot, which makes Roombas. In addition to tidying up, Roombas are also great at mapping the interior of your home and creating marketable data for its parent company.

This, and its recent acquisition of One Medical, have made it harder and harder to escape Amazon’s panopticon and further entrench Jeff Bezos’s bookstore as an inescapable omnicorporation with its hands in every part of your daily life.

The iRobot acquisition also comes a year after Amazon revealed the Astro—a little Alexa on wheels that spies on you. Leaked documents acquired by Motherboard revealed that one of the goals of Astro was to create a robot that intelligently plotted out the interior of a user’s homes, even creating heat maps of highly trafficked areas. The Astro has not been well received, but people love their robot vacuums, which often do the same thing.

The news also comes weeks after the corporate giant purchased the healthcare company One Medical for $3.9 billion. These recent acquisitions give Amazon access to medical records, maps of customer homes, voice samples through Alexa, home network activity through its Eero brand of mesh routers, videos of neighborhoods and random passersby through Ring cameras, and a wealth of consumer data through its website. Then consider that a giant portion of the internet runs on Amazon Web Services, that 1 out of every 153 Americans is an Amazon worker, that it owns a large and popular grocery store chain, just subsumed GrubHub into its orbit, so on and so forth.

Leftists left aghast by the loss, through a Supreme Court ruling, of their cherished federal "right" to abortion now are turning to marriage as the next battleground on which they plan to "drive Christians out of the public square," according to a Republican senator.

A recent episode of "Washington Watch with Tony Perkins" featured Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., and a report at Washington Stand explained his decision to oppose a Democrat agenda point to redefine marriage nationwide.

That will be used, he warned, as a weapon to take Christians out of any position of influence.

The Democrats' H.R. 8404 is called the "Respect for Marriage" law but Lankford said the scheme imposes a top-down demand for every state to recognize any "marriage between two individuals."

Included would be open marriages, those involving a minor, or "any other new marriage definition that a state chooses to adopt."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who once stood in front of the Supreme Court and threatened justices, by name, if they overturned the faulty Roe v. Wade abortion precedent, said he wants to vote on the "marriage" agenda as soon as possible.

On Thursday night, it seemed there was no more exclusive place to be in Miami than the District 7 town hall Zoom chat room.

As local officials, scientists, and advocates spoke during the one-hour conversation, Miamians were furiously typing their thoughts on what has quickly become the biggest topic of conversation in the area: the under-the-radar approval to pursue a pilot program for a homeless encampment in Virginia Key.

“This will be a bigger mistake than the Metro Rail system,” one commenter posted in the chat to over 200 residents at 7:10 p.m.

While the full effects of the niche insult can only be enjoyed by anyone who has suffered through Miami’s illogical two-line rail system, it speaks volumes about the public sentiment around the plan to erect up to 100 “tiny homes” on a historic barrier island with a stained racial history. The encampment plan has spurred outrage from every type of Miamian: environmentalists who are worried about destroying the island’s already endangered ecosystem, outdoor enthusiasts concerned about ruined recreational activities, and homeless advocates sounding the alarm about the lack of infrastructure in the area off Rickenbacker Causeway, which could leave relocated people without transportation, sewerage systems, and even access to food.

Majority of Covid Hospital Admissions Over Winter Were Vaccinated, PHE Study Shows

Polls of the U.S. public continue to show that up to twice as many Americans have lost a household member to a Covid vaccine injury as have lost one to Covid.

The pooled results of five surveys of the American public, now totalling over 2,500 people, show that while 4.4% of respondents reported that a member of their household had died from COVID-19, 8.9% said a member had died as a result of Covid vaccination.

The results also showed that 8.6% said they had been injured by their vaccination, 4.9% that they had sought medical help and 3.2% that they had been hospitalised, while 3.6% said that as a result of vaccination they were no longer able to work a full day or at all. These are percentages of all respondents. If we look only at the 74.0% vaccinated with at least one dose then the figures, as a proportion of vaccinated persons, are 11.7% injured, 6.7% needing medical help, 4.4% hospitalised and 4.8% unable to work. While these figures are self-reported and there is no control group, since the unvaccinated were not asked about adverse events, they are still alarmingly high.

Tesla has managed to strike a deal with the state of Nuevo Leon to have its own lane at the US-Mexico border, which should help the company and its suppliers get across faster.

Nuevo Leon is a weirdly shaped state that managed to have its border drawn in a way that gave it a little 9-mile border with the United States and more specifically the state of Texas.

While it is small in size, it has a large population of more than 5 million people – most of them concentrated around Monterrey, its capital, and the many industries in the region, including many automotive suppliers.

The 9-mile border means that the small state, which also borders the bigger states of Coahuila and Tamaulipas, manages its own border crossing with the US.

Conservatives are just 15 states away from an unprecedented gathering that could rewrite large parts of the US Constitution and fundamentally change American life.

With Congress' initiative, the US Constitution has been amended 27 times. But never has the core American document been amended through a state-led process — the second track that the founders created under Article V of the Constitution.

Conservatives are frustrated by Democrats' control of Washington and — even when Republicans are in charge — the growing size of government.

"The idea of states coming together is going to scare the living hell out of Washington," state Rep. Bill Taylor of South Carolina, who led his state's push to pass a call for a convention, told Insider. "They are going to be terrified of the states."

Health Freedom Defense Fund, whose court victory overturned the sweeping federal Travel Mask Mandate, has filed its response to the government’s appeal to reinstate the mandate – and recover the sweeping, unprecedented federal regulatory powers over Americans’ daily lives and conduct.   The filing points out major flaws in the legal and scientific justifications for the illegal mandate.

In a 77-page filing with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, HFDF – and its attorneys with the Davillier Law Group – detailed how the order requiring all travelers to wear masks lacks not only any rooting in federal statutes, but it also violated existing federal law in how it was promulgated.  The mandate also suffers from a consistent application of sound science.

“The Biden Administration is trying to paper over an illegal, sweeping mandate on Americans that is full of massive legal and scientific holes,” said HFDF Founder and President Leslie Manookian.  “That a federal agency should be able to just usurp the power of Congress, and violate fundamental individual rights is not only at odds with the law – it defies basic common sense.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured the Philippines on Saturday that the United States would come to its defence if attacked in the South China Sea, seeking to allay concerns about the extent of the U.S. commitment to a mutual defence treaty.

In meetings in Manila dominated by discussion on simmering U.S.-China tensions over the Taiwan visit of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Blinken said a 70-year-old defence pact with the Philippines was "ironclad".

"An armed attack on Philippine armed forces, public vessels and aircraft will invoke U.S. mutual defense commitments under that treaty," Blinken told a news conference.

"The Philippines is an irreplaceable friend, partner, and ally to the United States."

The white man who fatally shot Ahmaud Arbery after chasing the 25-year-old Black man in a Georgia neighborhood was sentenced Monday to life in prison for committing a federal hate crime.

Travis McMichael was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood in the port city of Brunswick. His punishment is largely symbolic, as McMichael was sentenced earlier this year to life without parole in a Georgia state court for Arbery’s murder.

Wood said McMichael had received a “fair trial.”

The United States has accused Beijing of "provocative" and "irresponsible" actions after Taiwan said China rehearsed an attack on the island.

Taiwan said it responded to the Chinese drills, now in their fourth day, by deploying aircraft and ships on Sunday.

The heightened tensions follow a trip to Taiwan by a US delegation led by senior Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

China views the visit as a challenge to its claims of sovereignty over Taiwan, which sees itself as distinct.

Taiwan's defence ministry said Chinese ships and planes carried out missions in the Taiwan Strait over the weekend, with some crossing the median line - an unofficial buffer separating the two sides.

Freight ships carrying almost 170,000 tonnes of grain and other products set sail from Ukraine's Black Sea ports this morning as part of a U.N.-brokered deal to protect the export of vital foodstuffs from the nation amid war with Russia.

Foreign-flagged ships yesterday docked at a Ukrainian port for the first time since Russia's invasion began on February 24, according to infrastructure minister Oleksandr Kubrakov.

Four bulk carriers were then loaded to the brim with corn, oil and other sorely needed products, Ukraine's sea ports authority said on Facebook, and were able to leave the southern ports safely.

The operation was overseen by a Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) in Istanbul where Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish and U.N. personnel are working to kickstart grain shipments from Ukraine.

'We are gradually moving on to larger volumes of work. We plan to ensure the ability of the ports to handle at least 100 vessels per month in the near future,' Kubrakov said on Facebook on Sunday.

He said Ukraine soon planned to involve Pivdennyi port in implementation of the grain export initiative and expected that as a result Ukraine will be able to ship up to at least 3 million tonnes of goods per month.

GOP Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' similarity to Donald Trump would make him a 'dangerous' presidential candidate in 2024.

In an interview with the New York Times, the conservative Trump critic said she could support a Republican nominee - but not one that peddled the ex-president's election fraud claims.

Nor could she back DeSantis, Cheney suggested, despite the GOP governor's skyrocketing popularity over his opposition to the Biden administration on COVID-19 mandates and legislation that Democrats have described as anti-LGBTQ.

'I think that Ron DeSantis has lined himself up almost entirely with Donald Trump, and I think that’s very dangerous,' she said.

Cheney added that she 'would find it very difficult' to support DeSantis.

Both DeSantis and Trump - as well as Cheney herself - have suggested they are considering running for higher office in 2024.

Chinese and Taiwanese warships played high seas "cat and mouse" on Sunday (Aug 7) ahead of the scheduled end of four days of unprecedented Chinese military exercises launched in reaction to a visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Mrs Pelosi's visit last week infuriated China, which regards the self-ruled island as its territory.

Beijing responded to the trip with test launches of ballistic missiles over the island's capital for the first time and cut some areas of dialogue with Washington.

About 10 warships each from China and Taiwan sailed at close quarters in the Taiwan Strait.

Some Chinese vessels crossed the median line, an unofficial buffer separating the two sides, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The island's Defence Ministry said multiple Chinese military ships, aircraft and drones were simulating attacks on the island and its navy. It said it had sent aircraft and ships to react "appropriately".
