Thought for the day

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won.  There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall.  Think of it--always." -- Mahatma Gandhi

Swedish appliance maker Electrolux AB announced a cost reduction program after reporting a plunge in demand for its home appliances across Europe and the US

The world's second-largest home appliances manufacturer after Whirlpool said, "market demand for core appliances in Europe and the US so far in the third quarter is estimated to have decreased at a significantly accelerated pace compared with the second quarter, driven by the impact of high inflation on consumer durables purchases and low consumer confidence."

It noted: "High retailer inventory levels have amplified the impact of the slowdown in consumer demand."

Remember, there's a massive inventory glut of consumer goods at retailers.

A lawyer for former President Donald Trump criticized the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the FBI raid on the 45th president’s Mar-a-Lago residence and said it is a “fair question” to ask whether the agency is engaging in a cover-up.

What we have in this situation is a historical first. And I mean that in a very negative way, to have this search warrant based on failed [National Archives] negotiations, I suppose, that allowed the government to basically ransack the president’s residence,” attorney James Trusty told Fox News this weekend.

You’d think in this era of the attorney general constantly talking about rule of law and transparency, that we would be the first one to say, ‘Sure another set of eyes is perfectly fine.'”

While we have seen droves of companies either freezing hiring or announcing broad-based layoffs, until now the majority of those job cuts have been focused in the tech sector.

This morning, things have changed, as The New York Times reports that, according to two people familiar with the plans, Goldman Sachs is preparing for a round of layoffs that could come as soon as next week.

The job cuts will affect employees across the company but it appears this move is more of an opportunistic moment to reinstate Goldman's traditional annual 'culling' of the herd - based on performance.

In fact. Goldman’s chief financial officer, Denis Coleman, told investors in July that the bank was “probably reinstating our annual performance review of our employee base at the end of the year.”

Democratic Senator Mark Warner used the 21st anniversary of 9/11 to absurdly compare the terrorists who attacked the twin towers and the Pentagon to “insurgents” who entered the Capitol on January 6.

Warner made the comments during an appearance on Face the Nation.

The Virginia lawmaker was asked by host Margaret Brennan how vulnerable America was to terrorism now given what has happened in Afghanistan.

“Well, Margaret, I remember, as most Americans do, where they were on 9/11. I was in the middle of a political campaign and suddenly, the differences with my opponent seem very small in comparison and our country came together. And in many ways, we defeated the terrorists because of the resilience of the American public because of our intelligence community, and we are safer, better prepared,” said Warner.

Railroads and labor unions worked through the weekend to make a deal. There were little signs of progress, and rail companies are now taking steps Monday to secure shipments of hazardous and security-sensitive materials "in light of the possibility of a rail labor strike," the Association of American Railroads (AAR) wrote in a statement.

On Sunday, Norfolk Southern released a statement detailing it had "begun enacting its contingency plans for a controlled shut down of our network at 00:01 on Friday, Sept. 16." The railroad said two labor unions are holding out on new contracts, "we still do not have a commitment not to strike and must act accordingly," adding, "Our goal is to ensure that in the event of a work stoppage, crews, equipment, and freight safely reach their destinations with minimal disruption."

Union Pacific and CSX also announced contingency plans for a possible work stoppage. BNSF told customers to call Congress so lawmakers on Capitol Hill can "intervene to prevent or quickly resolve the service disruption" if a labor strike materializes on Friday. The railroad also said: "We will begin to take steps to manage and secure the shipments of hazardous and security-sensitive materials as early as Monday."

Germany has crossed a red line with Russia by sending arms to Ukraine, Moscow’s ambassador in Berlin said on Monday. The decision undermined decades of reconciliation since the end of World War II and the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, the diplomat added.

“The very fact that the Ukrainian regime is being supplied with German-made lethal weapons, which are used not only against Russian military service members, but also the civilian population of Donbass, crosses the red line,” Ambassador Sergey Nechaev said in an interview with Izvestia newspaper.

He added that Berlin should have known better, “considering the moral and historic responsibility that Germany has before our people for the Nazi crimes.”

“They have crossed the Rubicon,” Nechaev stated, using an idiom for passing the point of no return.

This week, a number of international and Russian journalists convened in Moscow – with more joining by video link – to discuss the now-infamous Ukrainian Mirotvorets "kill list." Many of them are included themselves.

While some don't take it seriously, the horrific car-bombing murder of Darya Dugina on August 20 and the subsequent marking on her Mirotvorets entry as “liquidated” makes it fairly clear the people behind the list do, in fact, want people dead.

The same thing happened to the entry of Russian photojournalist Andrei Stenin and many others listed and subsequently killed, including the Italian Andrea Rocchelli.

Thousands of people poured onto the streets of Vienna on Saturday, protesting against the soaring cost of living, with many denouncing the Austrian government and the “globalist agenda.

An estimated 3,000 people took part in the rally, as reported by the Heute newspaper, citing the city police force. Another gathering, dubbed the “patriots’ march,” also took place in downtown Vienna. There was a heavy security presence along the routes, and both events passed without incident.

An American satellite is partially disintegrating in orbit, endangering other spacecraft circling Earth, Russian scientists warned on Saturday.

The craft in question is the US geostationary communications satellite Galaxy 11, operated by satellite services company Intelsat, according to the Moscow-based Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics at Russia’s Academy of Sciences. It had been launched in 1999 as a backup for the Intelsat 802 satellite.

Telescopes have been following several small-sized fragments that detached from Galaxy 11 and now pose a potential threat for other satellites in orbit, the scientists said.

The Keldysh Institute said that the exact reasons for the disintegration of the spacecraft were currently unknown, but suggested that it could be the result of the aging of its thermal insulation, solar panels or other equipment.

Mossad chief David Barnea warned his US counterparts against joining a restored nuclear deal with Iran, Israel revealed on Thursday, after the spy chief returned from Washington. During his trip, he met with the heads of the CIA, the FBI, the National Security Council, the Pentagon, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as senior State Department officials.

Barnea showed the intel chiefs “sensitive intelligence materials” and made it clear that “Israel will not be able to stand idly by while Iran continues to deceive the world,” according to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office. The Americans reassured him that the US remained “committed to the security of the State of Israel,” however.

The Americans emphasized that they will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon and that they will continue to act in full cooperation with the State of Israel with regards to regional issues in the Middle East concerning the security of the State of Israel,” the statement continued.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will again try to encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, to negotiate a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis, during the forthcoming summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), Turkish media reported.

Erdogan will meet with Putin on the sidelines of the SCO summit in the Uzbek city of Samarkand from September 15-16. Th talks between two leaders will focus on the situation in Ukraine, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported. During the meeting, Erdogan plans to stress Ankara's intention to make further efforts to end the hostilities and achieve a sustainable ceasefire through mediation initiatives, according to the media outlet.

The parties will also discuss the functioning of the "grain corridor," the newspaper reported. Erdogan will ask Russia to send its goods through a maritime corridor coordinated by Turkey after Putin's statement that almost all the grain exported from Ukraine was sent not to developing countries, but to the European Union, with two ships out of 87 reaching countries in need.

The Orion Nebula, which formed more than 4.5 billion years ago, is teeming with different colored gasses, molecular material, dust and scattered starlight and a new image snapped by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the first to look at the cosmic formation's center, allowing researchers to better understand how massive stars are birthed by the colossal cloud of dust and gas.

The image shows an open cluster of young massive stars that shape the cloud of dust and gas with its intense radiation and dense filaments that may play a key role in birthing new stars.

The nebula was previously photographed by the Hubble Telescope in 2004, but this device uses visible light and its view was obscured by the large amounts of stardust.

Finally, after having been held in U.S. CIA and military custody for more than four years while being subjected to “all appropriate pressure” by “interrogators” employing their “full range of permissible techniques,” the former student at North Carolina’s Chowan College and North Carolina A & T, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, has finally claimed to have directed just about every major terrorism attack against the United States over the past fifteen years.  From the techniques that we have read about, one has to wonder what took him so long to start singing like a canary.

But little known to most Americans, no matter how closely they might follow the news, the torture by whatever name one might choose to call it, is not even the worst of it.  According to a March 2003 report that appeared in the Washington, DC, area only in the little-read Washington Times, the United States government has his two young sons in its custody.  As reported by Olga Craig of the Sunday Telegraph of London on March 9, 2003:

The boys [Yousef al-Khalid, 9, and his brother, Abed al-Khalid, 7] have been held by the Pakistani authorities but…they were flown to America where they will be questioned about their father. CIA interrogators confirmed that the boys were staying at a secret address where they were being encouraged to talk about their father's activities. "We are handling them with kid gloves," said one official. "After all, they are only little children, but we need to know as much about their father's recent activities as possible. We have child psychologists on hand at all times and they are given the best of care."

To the knowledge of this writer, nothing further about Mohammed’s sons has appeared in the news, so we may assume that that is where matters stand.  Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s sons, who would now be 13 and 11, have apparently been incarcerated somewhere in the United States for four years now, and all that time they have been at the tender mercies of the Central Intelligence Agency.  Now there may still be some innocents among us who will readily believe that the CIA has been giving them nothing but “the best of care,” but that could hardly include anyone with the imagination to put himself in Mohammed’s place.  These determined continued believers in the word of people who have been caught in lies repeatedly might also swallow the assertion that we nabbed these moppets to pump them for vital information, never mind that this kidnapping flies in the face of everything that is legal and decent and seems to be just another part of systematic U.S. practice.

If our purpose was simply to question them about their father’s activities, one might ask, why did we find it necessary to take them into custody and to bring them to the United States?  No, the lead sentence in the Sunday Telegraph story says it all; the children “are being used by the CIA to force their father to talk.”  As an unnamed CIA official is quoted, “His sons are important to him. The promise of their release and their return to Pakistan may be the psychological lever we need to break him."

The broken border is Donald Trump’s fault, according to Vice President Kamala Harris.

During an appearance on Meet the Press over the weekend, host Chuck Todd pushed the Veep on her claim that the border is secure, despite two million border crossings estimated by the end of the year.

“Final topic here. We’re here in Texas, I want to ask you about the border. Would you call the border secure?” Todd asked Harris.

“I think that there is no question that we have to do what the president and I asked Congress to do. The first request we made, pass a bill to create a pathway to citizenship,” Harris began before answering the question directly. “The border is secure, but we also have a broken immigration system, in particular over the last four years before we came in, and it needs to be fixed.”

“We’re gonna have 2 million people cross this border for the first time ever. You’re confident this border is secure?” Todd said, pushing the issue.

“We have a secure border in that that is a priority for any nation, including ours and our administration,” Harris said, attempting to blame the border crisis on former President Donald Trump. “But there are still a lot of problems that we are trying to fix. Given the deterioration that happened over the last four years.”

It’s tawdry enough that Hillary Clinton is hawking $30 hats flaunting, “But her emails.”

She also had the temerity to tweet, “The fact is that I had zero emails that were classified.”  That breathtaking lie was followed by a Sunday appearance on CNN in which Clinton claimed —with a straight face— “No one is above the law and no one should be escaping accountability.”

That’s like a bank robber scolding others for their heists.  But Hillary can’t resist insinuating herself into the Trump classified documents debate and inveighing against the man who deprived her of the presidency.  She’ll never get over it.

You’ll recall that in 2016 Clinton escaped accountability (i.e., prosecution) in her email scandal despite a cascade of crimes clearly committed.  That coup reinforced her twisted view that only she is above the law.  James Comey, then FBI Director, abetted Hillary’s corrupt behavior when he absolved her of wrongdoing by mangling the law and usurping the power of the attorney general.

Comey knew that Clinton had egregiously compromised national security and, in the process, committed a myriad of felonies under the Espionage Act and other criminal statutes.  The FBI did not raid her home to seize classified records as she worked furiously to destroy the evidence.  The pervasive bias that contaminated the case is a microcosm of the agency’s dysfunction and established today’s politically driven double standard: abiding by the law is important, unless you’re a Democrat.
