Tracking crime statistics – and more importantly, whether or not crime is rising or falling in the United States – is getting harder to do. That's because nearly a third of America's cities are no longer reporting crime statistics to the FBI.

This is more than just a problem for policymakers looking for data to address the cities most in need of assistance. It also means that some policymakers are demanding bad policy because they're relying on incomplete data.

The Marshall Project reported that 31 percent of the 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the U.S. failed to report crime data to the FBI's national database after transitioning to a new data collection system, according to the latest statistics from the FBI. That's a slight improvement from 2021, when 40 percent of law enforcement agencies didn't report crime data. Still, it's a glaring blind spot, especially when that data is missing from some of the largest metro areas dealing with rampant, out-of-control crime.

Climate campaigners are challenging the UK’s approval of the first new coal mine in the country in three decades, with the High Court beginning hearings on the case on Tuesday.

The UK’s previous Conservative government approved in December 2022 the Woodhouse Colliery project in Whitehaven, northwest England, developed by West Cumbria Mining.

Earlier this year, West Cumbria Mining (WCM) said that it “continues to focus on preparatory works prior to commencement of real construction activity, no later than early 2025,” when it announced that the High Court would hear on July 16-18 a challenge by two parties against the Government’s approval of planning.

The project to mine metallurgical coal, the one used for steelmaking, will be required to support steelmaking throughout the transition to Net Zero over the next few decades, WCM said at the end of 2023.

However, the new Labour government in the UK pulled last week its support for the project and said that it would no longer defend the case at High Court. The UK’s new Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Angela Rayner, has accepted there was an “error of law” in the approval from December 2022.

Claire's Observations:  The question  UK" Climatistas" need to be answering, logically and cogently, is what do they expect to use for energy, between now and a full transition to clean energy?!?  My  bet is that they have "no game" whatsoever in this instance,  and not approving this new mining endeavor may bring the UK to its knees, economically, faster than you can say "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"!!!!

California's gun control laws have blocked hundreds of thousands of lawful residents from being able to access their Second Amendment rights in a timely manner (and in some cases, preventing them from exercising those rights at all). But according to police in Oakland, California, those laws posed no problem for a 13-year-old boy who's accused of illegally acquiring a firearm and using it to murder a liquor store clerk in cold blood.

It’s been two days since Donald Trump announced Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate for this year’s presidential election.

This means that if Trump wins the election, Governor Mike DeWine (R) will potentially need to name a replacement for Vance to finish out his Senate term.

Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) is now saying that he would like to see the former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy be this replacement.

Ramaswamy has since responded that he would be interested in replacing Vance.

Secret Service chief Kimberly Cheatle was shielded by her own officers after furious US senators pursued her down the corridors of the RNC, demanding she explain how a gunman was able to get a clear shot at Donald Trump.

Cheatle was in the Milwaukee convention hall to oversee security arrangements on Wednesday evening -  just hours after making a 'cover-your-a** call' to senators about the shooting in Pennsylvania on Saturday night.

Senators John Barrasso of Wyoming and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee led the chase, complaining that they had not had a chance to put their questions to Cheatle during the call.

A frustrated Barrasso then issued an ultimatum to the security chief.

'You put him within less than an inch of his life,' Barrasso yelled at Cheatle.  'So resignation or full explanation.'

President Joe Biden arrived back in Delaware Wednesday night after testing positive for COVID-19 while on the campaign trail in Las Vegas.

The maskless 81-year-old - whose political future is in jeopardy due to age-related concerns - walked very slowly off of Air Force One, pausing multiple times, before putting a mask on inside the black SUV that is carting him off to Rehoboth.

He also appeared to need some assistance as he slowly nudged himself into the car, before the motorcade pulled away.

Over the past 24 hours, private conversations with three top Congressional Democrats have leaked out - and they've all reportedly given Biden the same advice - he's not going to win and it's time to go.

DailyMail.com confirmed U.S. Senators were told the 20-year-old gunman posted on Steam: 'July 13 will be my premiere, watch as it unfolds.'

On July 13 he opened fire on the Republican nominee from a roof just 130 yards away from the rally stage in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Joy Reid was accused of 'next level desperation' after suggesting that Joe Biden's brush with Covid is as heroic as Donald Trump's defiance in the face of an assassin's bullet.

The MSNBC host was speaking from the Republican National Convention as news broke that the president had cancelled a speech in Las Vegas after testing positive for Covid.

The liberal anchor dismissed the attack on Trump as a 'photo-op', and seemed dismayed at the contrast drawn by delegates between the president's frailty and his challenger's vigorous response to being shot.

'Should he (Biden) be fine in a couple of days, doesn't that convey exactly the same thing?' she demanded.

Leading Democrat congressman Adam Schiff has issued a stunning call for Joe Biden to exit the presidential race.

Schiff became one of the most high-profile Democrats to publicly sour on Biden amid spiraling concerns over his age in the wake of a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump last month.

'While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden's alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch,' Schiff said in a statement on Wednesday.

'And in doing so, secure his legacy of leadership by allowing us to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election,' he continued.

Webmaster addition: Biden is dragging the whole Democratic party down with him, and Schiff is looking at his dwindling chances of re-election.

What is happening...?

Here are a couple of short/medium term catalysts to explain the weakness (outside the most important one - the MoMo carnage - dealt with in previous email).

1. Rotation rampage......Several days of Big Tech underperformance, as investors expanded their exposures, adding more pro-cyclical exposure and lean into small-cap stocks, instead of concentrating positions in growth and momentum names

2. One weak earnings datapoint .....ASML's weaker than expected 3Q results

3. Show me the AI money.....Increasing focus on AI, tech earnings, and whether there is too much optimism already priced into the stocks

4. Trading a lowered bar ahead of next week......Consensus expects all five of the mega-cap AI-related tech stocks will report a slowdown in sales growth and four will also have a contraction in net margins

5. China....News reports that US is considering increased restrictions to limit China's access to American technology may also be contributing to Tech weakness.

SOX: Risk happens fast at these valuations

SOX plunged close to 7% in semiconductor sector's worst selloff since March 2020 on the prospect of increased export restrictions on advanced semiconductor technology, and by Donald Trump's latest comments on Taiwan. Taiwan "did take about 100% of our chip business" and "should pay us for defense," Trump said in a Bloomberg Businessweek interview.

As President Joe Biden flies back to Delaware from Las Vegas on Wednesday night, cutting his trip short after testing positive for Covid-19, he faces one of the most momentous decisions of his long political life: Should he heed the rising calls from his fellow Democrats to extinguish his bid for reelection?

For Biden, is it a new moment?

Even though anger and panic have been steadily rising inside the Democratic Party for nearly three weeks, after the president’s alarming debate performance in Atlanta, the White House and the Biden campaign are in a new place, multiple Democratic officials told CNN.

“The private conversations with the Hill are continuing,” a senior Democratic adviser told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid alienating the campaign and the White House. “He’s being receptive. Not as defiant as he is publicly.”

If you were worried that liberals would tone down the apocalyptic rhetoric about Donald Trump after Saturday’s assassination attemptHe’s an existential threat to democracy! a fascist! an aspiring dictator! an authoritarian! Hitler!—you can rest easy.

Apparently, the Left has concluded that the best way to avoid political violence in the future is to ratchet up their dire warnings about the end of democracy presaged by a second Trump presidency. (That’s almost as good as their plan to lower deficits by spending more.)

Mossad Director David Barnea, the Israeli official leading indirect negotiations with Hamas, said Wednesday that one of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s latest demands may prevent a potential ceasefire and hostage deal.

According to Haaretz, Barnea presented the security cabinet with the differences between Netanyahu and the negotiating team. He said the main problem now is Netanyahu’s insistence on creating a mechanism for Israel to monitor Palestinians returning to north Gaza during a potential ceasefire.

Israel had previously agreed to allow free movement of Palestinians so they could return to the north. But Netanyahu reversed that concession and publicly called for the agreement to prohibit armed men from entering the north.

Israeli security and military officials favor a ceasefire deal, but Netanyahu has been working to sabotage an agreement as members of his coalition government are threatening to quit, which could threaten his hold on power. Israeli officials have told the media that Netanyahu was looking to make sure a deal didn’t happen before he heads to Washington next week to address Congress and meet with President Biden.

Ankara also condemned Israel's military for repeatedly attacking the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, a facility to the south of Gaza City built and equipped by Turkey.

"The photo in the Palestinian press showing a group of Israeli soldiers in front of the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital in Gaza is further evidence of Israel's violation of international law and international humanitarian law," Turkey's foreign affairs ministry said in a statement.

The ministry stressed that the hospital was the "only centre" providing medical care for cancer patients in the enclave.

The death count for Palestinian journalists in Gaza has hit 160 as Israeli forces continue to target civilians throughout the Strip. The mass killing of reporters has shrouded the true devastation caused by the Israeli bombing campaign.

The Gaza media office reported that Palestinian journalist Mohammed Abdullah Mashmash was killed on Tuesday, the 160th reporter killed since October 7. He was the program director for a local radio station.

Mashmash was killed along with four other people at a UN-run school in the Nuseirat refugee camp. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reported, “The Israeli attack on al-Razi middle school in the heart of the camp – such a busy area – happened during a rush hour when the streets around the overcrowded school were full of people.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that Beijing had stopped arms control talks with the US over continued US arms sales to Taiwan and other steps that go against China’s “core interests.”

The US and China held consultations on arms control back in November 2023. A reporter asked Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian about comments from US officials suggesting China declined to hold another round.

“Over the past weeks and months, despite China’s firm opposition and repeated protest, the US has continued to sell arms to Taiwan and done things that severely undermine China’s core interests and the mutual trust between China and the US. This has seriously compromised the political atmosphere for continuing the arms control consultations,” Lin said.

According to Germany’s draft budget for 2025, Berlin will bring its spending on Ukraine to 4 billion euros ($4.35 billion), down from 8 billion euros ($8.7 billion).

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was initially reluctant to arm Ukraine and initially resisted sending heavy weapons such as tanks, citing the risk of World War III. But he eventually agreed, and Germany has become the top supplier of weapons to Ukraine in Europe.

The more hawkish wing of the Republican party is hoping former President Donald Trump will put ultra-hawks in prominent positions in his cabinet if he’s elected for a second term as a counterbalance to Sen. J.D. Vance being picked as vice president, POLITICO reported on Wednesday.

Vance being chosen by Trump has alarmed many Republicans due to his opposition to the proxy war in Ukraine. One influential GOP member of Congress told POLITICO: “I’m scared to death.”

The report said Republican hawks hope to see Mike Pompeo, Trump’s former CIA director and secretary of state, as the secretary of defense in a future administration. Pompeo is a staunch supporter of the Ukraine proxy war, Israel, and the US military buildup around China.

Israeli attacks have killed 81 Palestinians over roughly the last 24 hours, including an attack on a United Nations-run school shelter in Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, according to data released by the Gaza health ministry on Wednesday.

The Nuseirat strike, which killed 23 Palestinians on Tuesday, was at least the eighth Israeli attack on a school shelter in the last ten days. Six of the schools had been run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

"Why do they target us when we are innocent people?" Umm Mohammed al-Hasanat, a woman who was sheltering at the Nuseirat school, askedAl Jazeera.

"We do not carry weapons but are just sitting and trying to find safety for ourselves and our children," she said.

In minutes, Israeli war planes dropped a reported five 2,000 pound bombs on the area – an area the Israeli military had designated a “safe zone,” and which was filled with people who had been forcibly displaced from elsewhere in Gaza.

Tala’s slender body was sent into the air. Her plate of yellow lentils turned scarlet after being mixed with her blood.
