Iraq will see first natural gas production at its supergiant West Qurna field by the end of this year, Iraqi News reports, citing the Iraqi prime minister and federal energy authorities on Monday.

ExxonMobil withdrew from southern Iraq’s West Qurna 1 field in January, handing operations over to PetroChina, which now enjoys the largest stake in one of Iraq’s biggest fields.

The whole of West Qurna is home to an estimated 43 billion barrels of recoverable reserves, while West Qurna-1 was originally thought to have around 9 billion barrels, but was revised to 20 billion barrels in 2021. The target for first phase production is 700,000 barrels per day, up from 500,000 bpd previously anticipated.

In March, Reuters reported that Iraq had signed a five-year gas supply deal with Iran for 50 million cubic meters per day to feed Iraq’s power stations. Washington is attempting to encourage oil and gas deals with Iraq to avoid billions of dollars in revenue from gas and electricity exports for Tehran.

Just over a week ago, U.S. and Iraqi energy companies signed two deals designed to capture associated gas that Iraq is flaring due to lack of necessary infrastructure. The U.S. Department of State said in a statement that Iraq is currently flaring some 18 billion cubic meters per year of associated gas, second only to Russia.

Iraq has been strengthening ties with China, particularly in the energy industry, in recent years. In 2021, the two countries signed a framework agreement that opened the door for Beijing to acquire key Iraqi oil, gas and petrochemical assets.

Earlier this month, Iraq and China announced that the General Company for Ports in Iraq (GCPI), a consortium of Chinese companies, is close to completing the 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) oil refinery at Iraq’s key Faw Port. This is “in line with China’s eventual vision for Iraq as one part of a giant Mesopotamian client state including Iran as well,” Simon Watkins wrote for OIlprice.com at the time.

NYPD riot cops stormed Columbia University to quickly disperse protesters at an encampment and an occupied building in less than two hours.

Panicked pro-Palestine demonstrators tumbled down stairs as they tried to flee when cops flooded the Ivy League campus on Tuesday night.

Almost 100 people were arrested at the New York City university, according to NBC. Police stated there were no injuries or people resisting arrest.

Around 40 of those detained were picked up in on the first floor of Hamilton Hall, which students violently took over early Tuesday. Cops swooped in on the building through a window after using flash bangs to clear the way.

President Minouche Shafik called in the police 'to restore order and safety' to the campus amid the escalating protests and fears the demonstrations had been co-opted by external agitators.

The stench of death filled the halls of Gaza City’s Ahli Arab Hospital.

Bodies – many already decomposing – lay in heaps on the floor, next to injured patients writhing in pain.

Amid the chaos and suffering, one of Naifa Rizq al-Sawada’s relatives was methodically searching for signs of the family’s 92-year-old matriarch.

Naifa had gone missing more than two weeks earlier, in late March, after the Israeli army raided the family’s home near another Gaza City health complex, al-Shifa, and ordered everyone to leave.

Naifa hadn’t been seen since, and Israel’s intense military assault in northern Gaza had made gathering information on her whereabouts next to impossible.

"Did anyone arrive here that fits her description?" Naifa’s relative recalled asking hospital administrators after reaching Ahli Hospital, insisting on seeing any bodies resembling the elderly woman’s slender frame.

"'Uncover this one' – that's a man. 'Uncover this one' – that's a little girl. 'Uncover this one' – that's a child," said the relative, who spoke to Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity due to a fear of reprisals.

“I went to a different department, all the same – indescribable scenes that I will never forget.”

The family’s sombre search finally ended days later when, after returning to the seven-storey Gaza City building where Naifa was last seen, they uncovered charred bone fragments they believe belong to her.

"They gathered the bones in a shroud and dug a grave next to my nephew who was killed earlier in the war and buried Mum," Maha al-Nawati, Naifa's daughter who was displaced from northern Gaza last year, told Al Jazeera.

"Despite the pain, we were grateful and happy that we found her and gave her a proper burial ourselves."

Yet while the family says knowing that Naifa was no longer suffering brought them a sense of relief, the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear.

Al Jazeera has spoken to witnesses, rights advocates and family members to try to piece together what happened to Naifa - a case experts say is a stark example of the brutality of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Claire's Observations:  Hey, it takes a really "moral" member of the IDF, to pick off a 92 year old grandmother with a sniper's rifle!!  But under these circumstances, the family  will never know, precisely, how she died.

And prayers for both Israeli, and Palestinian people who have lost family or had family injured in this horrific mess!

To paraphrase Gandhi:  "An eye for an eye.... a tooth for a tooth... and suddenly, everyone is blind and toothless!!"

The Biden administration is considering allowing some Palestinians to come live in the United States as refugees.

CBS News reported Tuesday that senior officials across several federal agencies have discussed how to resettle Palestinians from Gaza, potentially using the United States Refugee Admissions Program.

The individuals chosen would have to have immediate family members who are American citizens or permanent residents.

They would have to pass a series of eligibility, medical and security screenings, but would then be able to obtain resettlement benefits, including housing assistance and a pathway to American citizenship.

The boss of Oklahoma's schools has ordered them to 'completely ignore' Joe Biden's new rules promoting children's LGBTQ rights, as more states joined the backlash against the President's Title IX overhaul.

The rewrite forbids discrimination based on gender identity and leaves schools vulnerable to lawsuits if they ban trans students from girls' locker rooms, rest rooms or dorms.

Florida became the tenth state to sue the administration on Monday after Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters slammed 'the most devastating attack on women's rights in our country's history'.

'In Oklahoma, we don't bend to the senseless will of Biden and his posse eradicating women's rights and putting women in danger,' he warned.

Webmaster addition: Title IX is a law and changes to it have to go through Congress. Biden is in dictator mode again!

Manhattan is in chaos as hundreds of police officers stormed universities in a coordinated strike to clear out pro-Palestinian protesters who refused to leave.

Protesters threw flares and barricaded themselves inside an administrative building at the City University of New York, about 20 blocks north of Columbia University.

NYPD officers moved in after 9.30pm to disperse crowds outside as flares turned the college's famous arch red and protestors chanted and waved flags in support of Gaza.

US officials say the pier will be operational next week

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin acknowledged on Tuesday that it was a possibility that the 1,000 US troops deployed off the coast of Gaza as part of a project to build a pier could come under fire and said they would be able to shoot back.

Austin made the comments in an exchange with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) at a House Armed Services Committee hearing. “They have the right to return fire to protect themselves,” Austin said.

When asked if it was likely that US troops would come under attack from someone in Gaza, Austin said, “That’s possible, yes.”

The staging area for the pier has already come under mortar attack. Nobody was hurt in the incident, and only minor damage was reported, but it highlights the risk to the US troops just off the coast of Gaza.

Claire's Observations;  So, Sec Def Austin, are  these teams going to be the "sacrificial lambs" to Justify more "US boots on the ground in Israel?!?

Forgive me sir, but this is what this very much looks like to thinking Americans!!!

RAFAH/JABALIA, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Born two months premature as war raged in Gaza, Palestinian baby Yehia Hamuda was evacuated to southern Gaza after Israeli forces raided the hospital where he was being cared for in the north.

His mother Sondos and father Zakaria scrolled through photographs of Yehia, now five-months-old, on a mobile phone at their home in Jabalia in northern Gaza, severed from the south by Israeli military checkpoints.

Sondos said it was too dangerous to make the 30-km (20-mile) journey from Jabalia to Rafah.

"There are tanks and bulldozers. My husband and I cannot go," she said. "They would kill us. I am afraid my son would end up living alone."

Yehia was born on Nov. 27, seven weeks into the conflict that was triggered when fighters from the Palestinian militant group Hamas stormed Israel in an attack that killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies.

More than 34,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip during Israel's offensive, which has laid waste to much of the territory, according to health authorities in the enclave.

With communications down, three months passed before Yehia's parents were able to make contact with the hospital caring for him in Rafah, and check he was okay. They had stayed behind in Jabalia, fearing they would find nowhere to stay in Rafah.

"After three months, I saw his photo on the mobile phone. I want to hold him. I want to breastfeed him. Every day, my chest hurts. I cannot deal with this," she said.

Yehia is being cared for by the nurses and medical staff of the al-Emirati hospital in Rafah.

She said he had become "the son of the neonatal unit," with everyone taking it upon themselves to take care of him: "He is very doted on, and we pay a lot of attention to him."

In Jabalia, Yehia's father Zakaria yearns to be reunited with him. "My only wish in life is to hold my son and for God to reunite us with our son," he said

Britain in Palestine 1917-1948 investigates the contradictory promises and actions which defined British Mandatory rule in Palestine and laid the groundwork for the Nakba (the catastrophe) and the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. The roots of the contemporary social, political, economic, and environmental landscape of Palestine and Israel can be traced back to this period, making it essential viewing for understanding Britain’s legacy in the region and the situation on the ground today.

I believe it was in Border Patrolman Bill Jordan’s book Tales of the Rio Grande where Jordan tells of what it was like arresting dozens of illegal aliens in the dark while alone or when working with just one partner. He said something along the lines of, “We believed in minority rights and when there are two Agents arresting 20+ aliens, we were the minority.”  It was his way of explaining some of the harsh tactics used to keep aliens in line.

In reading, talking to, and listening to lectures recently, I keep hearing about “minorities” when what is really meant is non-whites.  White people were once the majority of Europe and North America (I do not include Mexico in that). However, not only are we projected to be a minority soon, given that we have an open border, we should be looking at the world globally, as our enemies do. When posing the question, “What percentage of the world population is of white European ancestry?” I get a response of 12% from Brave's search engine, and 10.2% from GAB's AI.

Face it, white people are the minority. It's just that we live in all the nicer parts of the globe, so (with a few exceptions like Japan), every non-white wants to leave their septic-tank like countries and emigrate to a once majority white one.

There are an estimated 10,000 Palestinians buried under the rubble of buildings flattened by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian civil defence has said.

It would take two to three years to recover all the bodies unless digging equipment, which has been destroyed by Israel, is urgently replaced and allowed into the war-ravaged strip, it added

In a press release published on Tuesday, the civil defence also warned of the spread of diseases from the decomposed bodies.

It said high temperatures in the summer will likely increase the threat of epidemics, as heat accelerates decomposition of corpses.

“The General Directorate of Civil Defence renews its appeal to all relevant parties, led by the United Nations and the World Health Organisation… to urgently intervene,” the statement read.

Claire's Observations:  I think these numbers are very conservative, and the final tally will include many more.

And the reason these people will not get the heavy equipment in time, is that Israel and the IDF love the concept of infectious diseases killing Palestinians; no bombs, no bullets, just slow, horrific, and lingering deaths.

Launched in early 2024, NATO’s biggest military drills since the Cold War have spanned locations across Germany, Poland, and the Baltic countries. Held under the pretext of practicing repelling "aggression" by Moscow against allies in Russia's direct vicinity, they have been denounced by the Kremlin as undermining security in Europe.

NATO troops from 14 nations held drills against mock invaders in the woods outside the Latvian capital Riga in March, The Wall Street Journal reported.

However, the massive exercise to fend off the fictional enemy “Occacus” was plagued by language barriers, communications problems, and NATO weaponry compatibility issues.

It is an easy guess that implied under the "invading nation" was Russia, even though it was never mentioned outright.

A battalion led by Latvian Army Lt. Col. Gaidis Landratovs operated alongside US troops during the exercise. In line with the simulated scenario, enemy forces crossed Latvia’s border with Russia and were heading towards the capital. The enemy forces had identifying red X marks on their equipment.

US calls for Russia to hold talks on ending the Ukraine conflict seem detached from reality and ignore Moscow’s previous attempts to reach a settlement, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken insisted on Monday that Moscow’s alleged plans “to erase Ukraine from the map… failed.” He added that he hopes Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken note of Western support for Ukraine, “gets the message, and demonstrates a willingness to genuinely negotiate consistent with the basic principles… of the international community and the UN Charter: sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence.”

Responding to Blinken’s remarks later that day, Zakharova said American politicians seem to live in a “wonderland.”

Reports are emerging that Israel has extended a possible peace deal to Hamas, offering the possibilty of a temporary ceasefire in exchange for the release of all the hostages being held in Gaza. Biden administration Secretary of State Antony Blinken has described the offer as “extraordinarily generous,” although as The Grayzone’s Max Blumenthal points out, accepting the deal would undermine everything Hamas hoped to accomplish with the audacious October 7 attacks.

Despite immense pressure coming from the Biden administration for Israel to secure the hostage deal that's on the table with Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged that an invasion of Rafah will go on with or without a deal.

He issued the words Tuesday while speaking to an audience sympathetic to his hardline coalition. "The idea that we will stop the war before achieving all its aims is not an option," Netanyahu said. "We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate the Hamas battalions therewhether or not there is a deal — in order to achieve total victory."

In reference to the hawkish Gvura and Tikva forums a statement from by the Prime Minister’s Office indicated that "the groups urged Netanyahu and National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi to continue the war and to resist international pressure."

State Dept. Official Resigns, Says White House Inciting Attacks on US Troops

by | Apr 30, 2024

hala rharrit

The State Department’s former Arabic language spokeswoman says she resigned from her post after official talking points became too provocative. Hala Rharrit said White House policy was potentially provoking attacks on US troops, and explained she refused to do Arabic interviews starting in October because she did not want to “be the reason why someone hates America more.”

In an interview with the Washington Post, Rharrit said the talking points produced by the Biden administration “were provocative” and “oftentimes completely ignored Palestinians. Early on, it was very, very heavy on ‘Israel has a right to defend itself.’ Yes, Israel has a right to defend itself, but there was no mention of the plight of the Palestinians,” she stated. “I, in good conscience, could not go on Arab television with those talking points. All that that would have done is have caused someone to want to throw their shoe at the TV, want to burn an American flag or, worse, throw a rocket at our troops.”

Rharrit elaborated further In an interview with NPR that she dissented from the policy because it hurt America, not her personal interests. “From the get-go, I refused to do, as a spokesperson in the region, I refused to do interviews on Gaza,” she continued. “Not because I personally disagreed with the policy, but because I documented how this policy was undermining US interests in the Arab world.”

Since October 7, there have been hundreds of attacks on US troops deployed to the Middle East. One attack resulted in the deaths of three US soldiers in Jordan near the border with Syria.

“How we were being called out for a double standard and how people across the region saw through our talking points and no longer believed us for lack of credibility. I was documenting how I was causing a backlash,” the former official explained.

She added that the American government’s hypocrisy had become too blatant to ignore. “The double standards that we were having, we could no longer talk about human rights when we were in allowing and enabling the mass killing of civilians.” Rharrit continued, “We could no longer talk about press freedom when we remain silent on the killing of over 100 journalists in Gaza. Everything that we had stood for was no longer relevant.”

Claire's Observations:  God bless this woman, for her moral courage; this cannot be an easy decision for anyone in that position. I applaud her integrity, and hope that some organisation with the same sense of integrity, will hire her, and quickly.
